GRYFFINDOR HEAD OF HOUSE
Gryffindor’s Head of House is none other than Airey Flamsteed, the enthusiastic Astronomy Professor with pep in his step and a love of all things space related. His energetic nature makes him the perfect leader to watch over the lions, a rowdy bunch in their own right. How exactly does the man manage to prepare lessons, act as a mentor, and ensure none of the members of his house are eaten by acromantulas? Well, we were lucky enough to sit down with him and find out.
1. Thanks for taking the time to speak with us, Professor! First off, how did you keep your cool during the very stressful, and extremely scary, acromantula invasion?
Cooling charms do wonders for that sort of thing.
But in all seriousness, the training I did as an astronaut candidate with NASA helped prepare me for all sorts of high stress situations. When you are faced with one of the worst case scenarios involving having the gas inside your lungs expand, rupturing them and releasing air into the circulatory system, while your skin and the tissue underneath begins to swell as the water in your body vaporizes in the absence of atmospheric pressure and unfiltered cosmic radiation burns your flesh as the lack of any humidity causing your eyes, mouth, and respiratory tract to freeze over...and you still are able to swallow your fear to willingly strap yourself in a rocket and boldly go where no one has gone before...one finds they can handle a lot. Especially when the lives of individuals you swore to protect are on the line.
Except when it comes to felines. Those are something else entirely. Then it’s everyone for themselves.
2. Now a hard-hitting question for you. When did you develop your dislike of all things furry and how many lint rollers do you own, hm?
It it quite literally imprinted on my DNA. There is no when as the construct of time does not apply. As for the number of lint rollers, well, I do believe my record still holds in the Genius Book of World Records for largest lint roller collection. AND, if I may add, I did not cheat with magic to achieve this prestigious muggle honor. Magic doesn’t solve everything and is not the only ingredient to success, remember that.
3. If you had one of those muggle television shows about your life, which song would you want to be your theme song?
Wouldn’t THAT be a stellar accomplishment?! Although a series about my life would not be in the best interest of the masses. Perhaps I should look into rebooting the groundbreaking series that was Cosmos. There have been two incarnations you know, and it has been decades since Neil deGrasse Tyson’s ended...yes, I think I will see who among my associates can make this happen. Don’t suppose Cosmos: A Final Frontier would be an acceptable title...
What was the question again? Oh yes, well...um... I would want an original composition, nothing that is already out there now. You will all just have to wait and see.
4. Would you rather be stuck in a web with the headmistress for a month, or be locked in your office with one of Professor Morgan’s cats for a day?
Web with the Headmistress for a month. No contest.
5. Do you have any last words of advice for those graduating Gryffindors getting ready to venture out into the world?
Besides echoing the infamous words of Leonard Nimoy, "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. Live long and prosper." I would also like to remind all students, graduating or otherwise, so ensure that they are always running towards something. Never away and never stagnant.

GRYFFINDOR PREECTS
You know him, you love him - Hogwarts' resident Prince Charming, Zander Adair, has returned for his second term as one of Gryffindor's beloved Prefects! Though thought of as goofy and perhaps a little airheaded sometimes, Mr. Adair is the complete package and harbors great knowledge and wisdom of the world beyond his years, so don't let that silly persona fool you! With his incomparable sense of humor, his knack for bringing a smile to everyone's faces, and his deep kindness and compassion for others, this particular Prefect stands as a true testament to what every student leader should strive to be. We were blessed by his kindness when he agreed to take some time out of his busy life to answer some questions for us. What a great guy, right?
1. Another term has passed with you working beside Puck Greyvson as your Co-Prefect. Last term, it seemed that things were kind of bumpy for you as a team. How did your dynamic change this term, if at all? Puck and I are REALLY different, which I guess has the potential of a really awkward pairing. But her strengths make up for my weaknesses and vice versa. We bounce off each other, which can make Professor Flamsteed’s job a headache sometimes… But makes us pretty great Prefects In Crime. That’s our title, by the way. We’re trying to make it happen. 2. It was no secret that Professor Flamsteed, your Head of House, had some high expectations for you after the events that unfolded in the Forbidden Forest last term. How did you approach this term differently as a student leader, and what changes did you make in your attempts to make him proud? Um… Well, I already knew I was under a lot of pressure this time. So I had to pay extra attention to every decision I made before I made it, which is a lot of work for a Gryffindor. I think I took things a lot more seriously after knowing that Professor Flamsteed was willing to ask me to return as a Prefect again because it meant he still saw something in me and that he probably got an earful from Truebridge. |
3. Your fabulous girlfriend, Sophie Brown, is also a Prefect for Ravenclaw. How has it been having her on the team with you? Do you feel any extra responsibility to set a good example as you both share the limelight as a power couple?
Real subtle, Soph. But I guess having you on the team has been the best thing that’s ever happened. ‘Cause we can always pretend like we’re on duty when really we’re just using our badges as an excuse to stay out late and goof—I mean uh, yeah the extra responsibility is a lot of pressure. But I think we’re taking our job very seriously as a team. We’re the epitome of maturity. Great examples for the kids.
4. I know the acromantula attack on the school is a touchy subject for you as you feel responsible for their anger toward Hogwarts. First and foremost, the only one blaming you for it is you, Zander Adair, and secondly, it is NOT your fault. That being said, do you have any thoughts you'd like to share with us on this matter?
Tell that to the acromantulas, Soph. I guess I should share a formal apology for Noel Wallace, though. The spiders accidentally dragged away the wrong blonde. You’d think with so many eyes, they’d notice. I reckon it had to do with my haircut. Sometimes I hardly even recognize myself.
5. What do you love about Hogwarts, and what makes it home for you?
The food is great. The people are nice (well, mostly). There’s an endless supply of hot cocoa in the kitchens. And there are lots of pretty girls. What more could you want?
6. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
My worst nightmare, probably.
7. If you were facing a boggart, what do you think yours would be?
Only being able to eat one food for the rest of my life (re: #6). Or my Runes OWL. Now THAT was terrifying. Did you see me shiver just now?
8. What's your favorite memory thus far in your Hogwarts career?
One time Kevin Hirase and I had a pillow fight with Peeves. It was tons of fun and slightly dangerous. The cleaning up bit afterwards wasn’t as great, but I think we were on too much of an adrenaline rush to really mind.
9. Has there been a Hogwarts professor who has made a powerful impact on your life?
Yeah, definitely a few of them. But if I say who they are, the others might fail me for not choosing them. And I’m not taking any risks.
10. There's an aura of despair and uneasiness in the wake of the acromantula attack on the school. People need a voice of encouragement to be a beacon of light for us all, and that voice is you, Zander Adair. What would you say to those who are discouraged and feel that Hogwarts is unsafe?
First of all, who said I’ve got to be that voice? That goes only second in the list of worst ideas, right after the ‘putting a forest of man-eating creatures behind the castle’ one. Seriously, who came up with the blue prints for this place? As for the unsafe bit, I guess you’ve just got to realize that if Zander Adair managed to survive, literally anyone else can do it too.

Sassy and full of life, the firecracker that is Puck Greyvson held tight to her Prefect badge for a second term! We here at the yearbook are under the impression that this stylish, loyal friend to those she deems worthy would do just about anything for those who earn her trust and love, and her leadership qualities of confidence, creativity, and ambition make her such a strong role model for her fellow Gryffindors. Ms. Greyvson was sweet enough to spare us some of her free time to talk about her thoughts on this term!
1. Another term of working with Zander Adair as your Co-Prefect means another fun term as a student leader, right? Was your team dynamic any different this term, and what do you think is your greatest strength as a pairing? Yeah, any term working with Zander is great. Well the only thing probably is that he seems happier? I guess that’s probably because he’s dating someone he really likes? And I’m proud of him for that. I guess our strengths are probably a bit weird? He’s super awkward in the most hilarious down to earth way and I think that makes it so that he can communicate with practically anyone, but sometimes when he’s too nervous I try to be brave and give everyone the good old “hey we’ll get through this” talk. We kind of are equal opposites I guess? But he’s one of my best friends here. 2. Professor Flamsteed was pretty upset after last term's Forbidden Forest incident. Anyone who paid any attention could see that there was tension between you, the professor, and Zander at the start of this term. What lengths did you take to right the wrongs of the past and make your Head of House proud? |
Well we came up with initiatives for the students as an orientation kind of thing – and we really tried to bond with the students in our care. But, honestly I get why Professor Flamsteed was upset. A student died and instead of realizing that it wasn’t our faults we blamed ourselves and the entire reason the student was harmed is because he followed people into the forest and was foolishly brave to the point of well not being smart. As we know from this term it’s a place you want to avoid. Even if we fight off the rest of the spiders we need to be focused, and follow the rules.
3. Did you have an existing fear of spiders before this term and if not, do you have one now?
Before this term I would have said ‘no, not really,’ but now that my friends were abducted and fed scraps of food so that they could be a spider feast…I just, I can’t say that I’m not a tiny bit fearful of them.
4. When not in your school uniform, it seems that you wear a lot of black. What is it about the color that appeals to you so much?
Well honestly it’s rather easy to clean, there’s a stylish line to it. And I like mixing colors in as well – like wearing a dark blazer with a floral dress can be really cute. I guess it could be because when I was a kid I did grow up originally in New York City and black is a fashion staple item there.
5. If you won 1,000 galleons, how would you spend it?
Oh you come up with good questions Sophie, really, I like these. Well if my brother had a way he’d say ‘save it all spend nothing’… but where’s the fun in that? I’d want to put some of it away for safe keeping and for rainy day stuff but mostly I think I’d either use it buying a lot of thrift store finds and revamping them for as little as I could? Because why not have a unique wardrobe full of cozy cute things?
6. Do you have a favorite place in the school or on the school grounds?
I do really, in the school I really love Pride Rock it’s basically the place to be in the Gryffindor Common room, and the kitchens. The house elves are adorable – I taught Toddles about hugging this term when he was sad and all weepy… and well, on the grounds it’s a tie between the lake and the tree house. Probably the tree house because you can sometimes see the lake from it.
7. Who would you say has been most influential in your life and made you into the leader you are today?
Honestly, I think it’s the experiences that I’ve gone through with family that have helped quite a lot. My mum was a good influence but because I can’t turn to her now I would have to say it’s a mix of all my professors, the books that I’ve read, and really many different people have helped sculpt me into who I am today. My aunts, uncles, and everyone that has raised me have really had a positive influence on me. And honestly, working with Zander has helped me to grow into being a better leader.
8. What is your greatest ambition?
Ooh tough one, my ambitions have kind of changed a bit over the years. Last year when Kevin Hirase was threatened with being thrown into a closet I really debated going into Education and working with the laws behind how people are governed in schools. However, I really want to be creative and work in something that I can express myself in? I’d love to own a music label or be in fashion but honestly if those don’t work out I’ve even been toying with going into Defense Against the Dark Arts and working in the ministry. I guess time shall tell… but helping people does really appeal to me it always has.
9. If you could change, undo, or redo anything from your time here at Hogwarts thus far, what would it be?
Oh I don’t know if I would change anything so to speak, except maybe I would have opened up to people a little faster? That and some people probably thought I didn’t like them at all when I was just being nervous, awkward, and standoffish because of that… so, I guess I would have tried to have been more open about things.
10. Do you have any words of wisdom you'd like to share for anyone who might read this in the future?
Okay, for future readers? Well, I guess the best I can tell them is to not change themselves for the people around them. Don’t be afraid to let your individuality shine through. Not everyone will like you, but all that matters is that you like yourself. Because you are the most important thing in your life.

HUFFLEPUFF HEAD OF HOUSE
For two terms, students of Hufflepuff house have blossomed under the careful eye of the school's Ancient Runes professor, Abraham Botros. No matter what kind of issue came his way, be it professional or personal, he was able to handle it with grace and ease. But it has been rumored that the face of our beloved big badger is to hold this position no longer after this year, and this rumor unfortunately proves to be true. We managed to get last word with our beloved Hufflepuff Head before he leaves his house in the hands of someone else.
1. Is there ever a conflict of interest between your roles as Ancient Runes professor and Head of House?
I was afraid I was more lenient towards my Hufflepuff students, being their Head, but fortunately, I don't think I've ever been in that position before. The students who attend my classes are generally ones who want to learn about Runes, so they behave well.
2. What was the most valuable lesson you've learned while serving as the supreme badger?
Never overlook the tiny complaints, not even ones about itches.
3. How did you feel about the spidery shenanigans that occurred at Hogwarts this year? Do you think anything could have been done to deal with the situation more effectively?
It's been intense until the end, but I'm glad how it all resolved. I'm not sure there was something more we could do, except maybe take the small problems more seriously in the future.
4. As Headmistress Truebridge announced, she will be stepping down from her position as the head of Hogwarts, and you will be assuming her duties. What do you think this will be like, and how has your job as Head of House prepared you for this undertaking?
I'm sad to see Annie go; she's been a great leader and I think the school needed her high-maintenance personality. However, I understand her wish to focus on her family. We've stolen her from them long enough, and she's still young. I think being Head of House is a preview of how one would be Head of the school, the latter being on a bigger scale and involving many more duties of course.
5. Which part of your current position will you miss the most as you move on to bigger and better?
I'll be sad not to have Hufflepuff kids come knocking at my door to tell me about their pets or friend feuds. It's very heartwarming to be the ear that listens to them.
Thanks for an amazing two years of leadership, Professor! We can't wait to see how your great traits make the school an even better place to live and learn.

HUFFLEPUFF PREFECTS
Sixth year Aditya Rehman has been the Hufflepuff male prefect for a few years now and his leadership has grown with each one. He’s a great student, a good friend, a fantastic Gobstone player, and a great leader. As busy as he is as prefect, he is always found helping others. The friendly smiling Hufflepuff has been known to help a friend or younger classmate study or get their homework done. We got to take a few minutes of his time to get some questions we were wondering answered.
1. What was the hardest thing about this term? I would definitely say having to deal with those spider webs. They were so annoying plus it didn't help that I developed a phobia for them. 2. What is your favorite class? Care of Magical Creatures... and Potions! I know you asked for one class but I love Potions just as much. It's difficult to choose which is my favourite. 3. How do you manage to be so good in Gobstones and keep up with all your classes? That's a pretty good question. At first I couldn't figure out how I would manage the two but then I realised it's all about time management. It's sort of like balancing them along with everything else in my life. 4. If you could be a joke item which would you be? I like this question a lot. A canary cream! It's food and a prank combined. What could be better than that? 5. Would you ever have a pet spider? No way. Not now, not ever. I don't care if it's even a tiny one, I never want one. |
6. What was the best thing about this term?
Hufflepuff winning the Gobstones Cup! Hufflepuff moments are always my favourites.
7. Where do you spend you free time when you aren't doing prefect duties?
Usually it's somewhere out on the Grounds. I enjoy being outside so that's most likely where anyone will find me. Good luck finding the exact spot though.
8. Favorite perk of being a prefect?
The event planning with the other prefects for sure! Then there's the actual getting the stuff ready for it where fun and crazy things always happen.
9. What is your advice for young Hufflepuffs that have made it through this spider filled term?
For my younger Hufflepuffs, I would just want to tell them to not let the events of this term get to them. The events were scary, yes, but Hogwarts is a great place with great people and they should focus on tackling the new term as well as having fun.
10. What are your summer plans?
For a few weeks I'll be home and spending most of my time at the Cricket Club where I'll be coaching younger kids. Afterwards, I'll be spending some time at Ilia's family's ranch/ conservancy with her, AJ and Henric. Of course now that I can do magic out of school means I'll be perfecting my Patronus Charm and working on turning Benny into a dragon.

Our seventh year Hufflepuff prefect is vibrant, bubbly, and so much fun to get to know. You have probably seen her around school full of smiles, but don’t let those smiles make you think this student leader will be walked on. She is a friendly Hufflepuff that can turn quickly if needed. Thankfully many haven’t had to see seventh year Marigold McAlistor this way. We got to sit down with the lovable prefect for a few minutes to ask her some questions.
1. What was the hardest thing about this term? The hardest thing was probably coming to terms that this is my last term at Hogwarts. In the beginning of the year, I was kind of in denial, but now it's sinking in and to be honest, it's scary. I'm going to miss this crazy, spider infested place. 2. What is your favorite class? HMM. Probably Astronomy, because I just really like stars. Plus, Professor Flamsteed is pretty awesome. 3. How do you manage to be so good in Gobstones and keep up with all your classes? Lots of midnight trips to the kitchens. 4. If you could be a joke item which would you be? Joke wand! I think they are super funny, even when I'm the one being pranked. 5. Would you ever have a pet spider? Maybe a small one. A tarantula at the largest. I like animals and bugs and stuff in general, but keep them smaller than a bread box, please. |
6. What was the best thing about this term?
Getting to know my friends and housemates a lot better. It was a realization that I might not see these people again any time soon, so I tried to get in as many pillow fights and heart-to-hearts as possible.
7. Where do you spend you free time when you aren't doing prefect duties?
Usually near the lake, if the weather's nice, or in spare classrooms and corridors.
8. Favorite perk of being a prefect?
I love working with such amazing people. Honestly, my fellow prefects are AMAZING.
9. What is your advice for young Hufflepuffs that have made it through this spiderfilled term?
Relax during the summer, and prepare to lose your love for something else next term.
10. What are your summer plans?
I'm going to try to visit New York with my boyfriend! And work at my local animal shelter.

RAVENCLAW HEAD OF HOUSE
Coming into the new term students and staff always like to see familiar faces as much as they like to see the new. The Ravenclaws were reassured of a familiar face with their Head of House Leobald Kitridge. Mr. Kitridge has been the Head of House for four terms now and this term again proved that he would do anything for not only his Ravenclaws, but the school as he joined the search and rescue and helped bring back the hostages from their webbed cage. With the term winding down we got a chance to sit and chat a moment with Mr. Kitridge and get the latest scoop on him.
1. What was your favorite part of term this year?
Given that most of the year was overshadowed by the spider attack I must say that my favourite part of term was the prefects event on the grounds. First time I could really relax, enjoy myself and not worry that a spider would crawl out of the woodwork and bite or kidnap a student or colleague. I especially liked the giant water slide and the 48 hour tattoos. It was a fun well organised event."
2. Would you ever have a spider as a pet?
Never in my life. I dislike spiders, even much more after this term. I'd never want to keep a spider as a pet.
3. What is your favorite book?
My favourite book I'd have to say is 'Thousand and One Nights' for its many and diverse fairy tales.
4. What advice do you have for your graduated claws?
My advice to the graduating eagles is to follow their dreams whether it's in quidditch or at the Ministry of Magic. I hope they all will continue to hone their skills and interests at university. And if they aren't sure what they want to do with their lives I suggest that they try different things and sign up for internships. That was how I found teaching.
5. What are your summer plans?
My summer plans includes going to a tropical beach somewhere and just relax, as well as visit and catch up with my family and friends and just take it easy.

RAVENCLAW PREFECTS
Returning Prefect Gabriel Banner showcased his skill set again this term as a strong, smart and dedicated student leader. With the added responsibility of the student newspaper on his shoulders and his impending graduation he shared some anecdotes about his time at Hogwarts and his life beyond the castle walls.
1. This term you adopted another title outside of Prefect-- Editor in Chief of The Quill. How did you handle both your prefect duties and Quill duties this term? In theory, the added responsibility didn't seem as intense as it actually turned out to be. As someone who likes to surpass expectations, the thought of not doing 'my best work' was overwhelming at times. I worried that I was spreading myself too thin; a quality over quantity situation. So, essentially, I compartmentalized; tackling things as they came. 2. Now that you are graduating, what pieces of advice would you impart to your younger Ravenclaw peers? "Keep calm and eat pumpkin pasties," because the "Hogwarts' Experience" is going to happen. It's best to just accept this fact, prepare as best you can, and learn from it. It would be a wasted ordeal otherwise. 3. Speaking of graduation, what are your plans after graduation? I'm staying in England until Christmas, and then moving to Germany to attend school. |
4. You are co-prefect with Sophie Brown. How did you two manage to handle all of the hysteria this term within your house?
That's mostly attributed to Sophie Brown. She was able to hold it together and confront situations in a way that I'm simply incapable of. I shut down in the face of chaos, hysteria, and danger. It seems to wake her up. So, she deserves those kudos.
5. What's your fondest memory at Hogwarts?
......Anytime I was able to work with Professor Culloden in the Potions' lab, I think. I'd never taken much of an interest in potions before Hogwarts. I had the knowledge, through independent research and light reading, but those times sitting with him, discussing theories and brewing techniques, will stay with me.
6. What do you think personally was the most effective attribute of yours as a Prefect?
My mind works in a way that is different from the others. I think, because of that, I was able to approach certain tasks with a more logical mindset. That, and I take very detailed notes during our meetings.
7. If you could nominate your fellow prefect for a superlative, what would you give her?
Most Likely to Rule the World in Ten Years
8. House pride is very strong amongst the four houses. What about being in Ravenclaw makes you the most proud?
I'm not an overly proud person. So...I couldn't say.
9. What is one thing you think every student should carry around the castle?
Their wand, a bezoar, and two pumpkin pasties; since people usually have two pockets, as well as two hands.
10. How would you sum up your Hogwart's experience in one word?
Eventful.

First time Prefect Sophie Brown had a lot to tackle this term as she transitioned from student to student leader. She divulged some of her fondest memories of this year and her plans for next term with her signature smile and sunny, positive attitude that, honestly, is contagious.
1) This is your first term as prefect. How did you handle the transition from student to student leader? It was a pretty easy transition, honestly. I won't lie - becoming a prefect has been a dream of mine since I was a first year. I craved the responsibility and honor that comes with it, and I like being in the limelight to set a good example for other people. So I've always kind of held myself to high expectations to be a role model for other people and try to be the best leader I could be, even before I had a badge. The only real difference is that now I have meetings, real prefect duties, and more privileges. It's a bit more work, but I love it. 2) With one year left at school, what are your dreams and aspirations for the following school year? For next year? Hmm... I dunno. I'd like to be able to solidify a job post-Hogwarts while I'm still in school, hopefully maybe as an intern for a prestigious Wandmaker such as Ira Banner of Ollivander's Wand Shop, and keep up solid marks both in classes and for NEWTs. It's probably going to be a hard year for me, though, what with my best friend, Tobias Fuller-Thompson, graduating this term, but I'll still have my boyfriend Zander Adair to go on adventures with. Still... no one can fill the hole that Tobes will leave because he's been my rock since my second term, so hopefully I'll adjust all right to not having him around. It'll be weird... but that's life, y'know? |
3) As a student leader, what wisdom would you impact to your younger peers?
I'd say... join as many clubs as possible, take advantage of the fact that you can visit professors in their offices just about anytime you want, and explore the school to its full extent. Even if you think you've seen it all, I guarantee you'll discover something new if you keep exploring. Also something I've learned this term thanks to a certain "stellar" professor: instead of running away from things... always strive to run TOWARD something. This subtle mindset shift will make all the difference in the world.
4) You are co-prefect with Gabriel Banner. How did you two manage to handle all of the hysteria this term within your house?
It's actually kind of funny that Gabe and I ended up as prefects together because aside from us both being wicked smart and having a knack for potions, we're pretty much polar opposites in terms of personality. But as they say, opposites attract, I suppose, because anywhere I had flaws, he had strengths, and vice versa. I think we leveled each other out well and though I won't put words in my housemates' mouths, I'd like to think they felt like they were under capable, responsible leadership and knew they could come to us in an hour of need.
5) Is it true that the prefect's bathroom has a hidden swimming pool?
Heh... I'm not at liberty to discuss this matter, but if there WAS a swimming pool in the prefects bathroom, I'd say that fellow prefect Zander Adair and I would throw private pool parties on a regular basis because how COOL would that be? But this is completely hypothetical. Obviously.
6) What do you think personally was the most effective attribute of yours as prefect?
My confidence, I think. I know who I am and I know where my strengths and weaknesses lie, and I'm super adaptable and good at being what others need me to be, too. I'm not afraid to talk to anyone and I'm good at taking the initiative to do things because I feel confident that I'll do a good job at anything that comes my way.
7) If you could nominate your fellow prefect for a superlative, what would you give him?
Most Likely to Achieve World Domination, probably. He is a Banner, after all.
8) House pride is very strong amongst the four houses. What about being in Ravenclaw makes you the most proud?
I think our house camaraderie is really strong. We might not have won a cup for anything in over a decade, but we have a really strong bond between housemates of all ages. So even though we're not winners in the traditional Hogwarts sense, we're winners because we have each other. No matter what happens, at the end of the day, we're family.
9) How would you encourage younger students and future generations to handle the day-to-day intensity of Hogwarts?
Honestly, I think all you can do is take it one day at a time. I'm very much a go-with-the-flow person - if I need a day to not study and spend time with friends instead, I take it, and I'm all the better for it. I think listening to your mind and body and resting from academics when you need it is the healthiest thing you can do, and you'll be even more successful than you would've been if you'd studied more because your body got the time it needed to refresh and recharge.
10) How would you sum up this year in one word?
Eventful.

SLYTHERIN HEAD OF HOUSE
It takes a special kind of someone to reign over the cunning and ambitious; a job that most wouldn't be able to handle let alone excel at but Healer Murdoch has proven herself time and time again. They often say the only way to deal with the mean and the nasty is by being so yourself. Now we're not trying to imply anything but I think we all know where I'm going with this and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Slytherin house is known for it's booming ambition and drive that sets them a part from the rest and by all indications they've got the right woman for the job. We managed to get a little sit down with the Slytherin Head of House herself and this is what she had to say.
1. How’s it going Healer Murdoch? Glad you could take the time to sit with me for this interview, I just have a few questions so we can get right to it. What do you think of your position of Head of House so far?
Hello. Things will be going much better once this term is over with and I'm at home with my husband. As for my position as Head of House, it's a job, one I take very seriously. For the past five years I have been not only a healer to the students at Hogwarts, I've also been a leader, mother, and yes, sometimes a friend to the students in Slytherin House. So to answer your question, I think very highly of my position as Head of House.
2. The snakes have become a rowdy bunch of recent times, what’d you think might be causing that and how d’you plan to fix it?
I have no idea what you're talking about. My snakes are perfect little angels. None of them got killed this term did they?
3. Let’s say…hypothetically……a student…like say…oh I don’t know—me, were to sneak into the Slytherin Common Room. What would happen?
Let's say, hypothetically, if you were to get caught, and you WOULD get caught, you would wish you would never have done such a stupid thing. Not only would you have my wrath to deal with, you would also have to answer to your own head of house. You students are sorted into different houses for a reason, and that reason is not to go around sneaking into other common rooms. My advice to you...
DON'T EVEN TRY IT! YOU WILL GET CAUGHT!
4. I heard you guys have a pet snake, um…what exactly do you lot feed that thing…..?
Snake food of course. You know, mice, rats, small rodents, little critters Professor Thompson gives us, any little critters we find roaming around.
Consider yourselves warned students. Keep a good eye on your pets or they just might end up as snake food.
5. What do you like about Slytherin house?
I love that it's not Hufflepuff. Enough said!

SLYTHERIN PREFECTS
Returning Slytherin Prefect Caleb Newell had hoped, from the beginning, for a quiet term. Alas, this is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry...and there are NO quiet terms. Through his experiences during the 2086-2087 school year, with planning, Prefect-duties, preparation for NEWT study next term, and a full-scale acromantula invasion, Caleb found time to sit down with us and answer our questions. Is there anything this boy can't do?
1. How has the experience of being a Prefect helped to shape you as a person? It's really helped me to realize that sometimes, it's NOT all about me and what I want to do. It's helped me curve my temper and try to see things from other people's point of view without abusing the badge, which is going to be super important if I want to be an Auror someday! 2. Slytherin leadership seems very involved (and tight-knit). Have you developed friendships with your Head of House, Healer Murdoch, and Professor Bellaire? Actually, no. I wouldn't say they are my friends - they are my leaders. I respect them and follow them but also look to them for advice if I need it. They're adults and I'm still a kid but they are helping me to mature, and I think that's why they're both kind of tough and known to be pretty intense. They're trying to help us by challenging us! So no, they're not my friends, but they are pretty great mentors! 3. What's it been like working with Beverly Wayne? Is she really as terrifying as she comes across? Not at all. She's awesome! We basically were thinking on the same wavelength like...90% of the time so it was really easy to work with her. |
4. In the vein of Prefect-talk, what's been the most challenging aspect of being a student leader this term?
Being afraid that ANOTHER Slytherin was going to end up being spider chow by the end of the term.
5. Focusing on the acromantula webs and sightings, do you think the attack was inevitable?
I honestly did NOT expect it. Greg was an unfortunate accident and I didn't think it would be something that would lead to an all out WAR with these creatures. I became a bit suspicious after all the spider webs began to appear around the castle, but I still would not have put two and two together because as I said, the death was a tragic, isolated incident in my mind.
6. Be honest. Did you think the Headmistress would return safely? Or did you, like so many others, think she'd already been eaten?
I'm not entirely sure. I really really, REALLY hope she is ok, but no matter WHO you are, fighting a giant spider has got to be tough. I just hope that she ends up being ok!
7. Back to academic happenings, what professors do you look up to the most?
Culloden is pretty great, as is Botros! They make pretty boring subjects a bit more interesting.
8. What about lessons? Were there any in particular that you enjoyed sitting?
My absolute FAVORITE is and always will be Care of Magical Creatures. I love animals and creatures and learning about them and how to care for them - although I'd love to do more activities with the animals like playing with them (or FLYING them in some cases ) rather than CLEANING or grooming them...hint, hint, Thompson!
9. With two years of Prefect responsibilities under your belt, what are you hoping to garner from your title next term?
I honestly want to survive next term with NO deaths and NO spider attacks. That will be a HUGE win in my book.
10. And to conclude this, if you were stripped of all magic save for ONE spell or charm, which would you choose to keep?
Protego. Your biggest asset in this world is the ability to protect yourself no matter what the situation!
After three successful terms in Slytherin Prefectship, Seventh Year Beverly Wayne was mostly relieved to have survived to tell the tale! True statement enough, as DANGER is an ever-present element in the Hogwarts-genetic code. The gold standard this term in what a leader should be, Ms. Wayne was more than happy to take time away from her NEWT study (among many other things!) to speak with us.
1. With it being your final year, was there anything specific you wanted to accomplish while you still held the Prefect badge this term? I wanted to keep my housemates safe and alive. Think that was accomplished fairly well, despite circumstances. 2. Slytherin leadership seems very involved (and tight-knit). Have you developed friendships with your Head of House, Healer Murdoch, and Professor Bellaire? I did not. While I did form a relationship with my Prefect partner, I didn't with either woman. I do admire their ways and authority, though. 3. What's it been like working with Caleb Newell? Do you have any parting advice for him? It was a great experience. I have to admit it took me time to get used to him, but he impressed me in his way of handling things. And advice for him: stay alive. He's a bright person and has a lot to show the world. 4. In your personal opinion, do you think there's something to be learned from the acromantula attacks this year? Is there not? For Merlin's sake. First, we know Hogwarts attracts trouble. We know this. We're reminded of it often, so why is there not enough security? That's a question for the Board of Governors. This term, in my opinion, we should have learned to not let things escalate. See something off? Investigate. Get rid of it before hundreds of lives are put at risk. |
5. Were you close with any of the people who were taken?
I can't say I was close to anyone, but I do know Lux.
6. Was there ever a moment when you thought...Wow, I could die? Or is that a natural feeling since this is Hogwarts?
I've acknowledged the risk ever since I decided to attend Hogwarts, but it did not hit me like that until this term. There WAS a moment when I thought I wasn't going to make it out safely.
7. Moving to a less somber topic, do you have a favorite professor? Or do you love them all equally?
I appreciate them all equally, but I did have a few favorites. Professor Culloden, Professor Airey, Professor Botros and Professor Bellaire.
8. How do you plan to approach your NEWT exams? Presuming the spiders don't return to finish us off.
I really hope they don't return or there will be no mercy. I need to get my NEWTs done. As for a plan, I do have one, and that's only for me to know.
9. What are you most looking forward to after leaving Hogwarts?
Traveling. I am going to travel for a full year before settling into university, where I will study to become a dragonologist.
10. LASTLY, if you could be any magical creature, WHAT would you be?
An Antipodean Opaleye dragon.
I can't say I was close to anyone, but I do know Lux.
